Northside Physio News

October 20 – New Team Member

Northside Physio welcomed Kayla to the team in early September, joining the team as our receptionist. Kayla is a local Thornbury girl who is currently studying a double degree in Law and Cyber Security. She will ensure you are greeted with a smile when you walk through the door, assisting you with all your booking needs and any queries you may have.

Kayla enjoys being active, running around on the footy field and helping others. You may even see her walking her dog Jett around the local neighbourhood. She is excited to be a part of the team and looks forward to meeting everyone.

September 20 – Dietetics

Northside Physio has the great pleasure of welcoming Warwick from Active Health Dietetics on board from the 30th of September!

Warwick is an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) and Accredited Sports Dietician (AccSD) with nearly 15 years’ experience. He specialises in areas such as digestive health and weight management as well as sports nutrition for endurance. Warwick sees food as medicine – it is part of life and something we bring into our body every day that has a boundless impact on our own health and well-being.

He provides individual consultations, working step by step on a personal nutrition plan to help meet your goals. He considers not only your nutritional intake but also the lifestyle and cultural influences on your nutrition, which makes your plan unique. Using multiple approaches and motivation, working with you so that an individualised plan is developed specifically for you.

Warwick is a local Thornbury family man with 2 girls, who help him in the kitchen whipping up a Mexican feast. He enjoys running and swimming and has often used himself as a guinea pig trying different nutrition strategies to his training.

He will be available for consultations on Wednesday afternoons at Northside Physio. To get in touch with Warwick and more information visit https://www.activehealthdietetics.com/.

Northside Physio looks forward to working closely with Active Health Dietetics in continuing to service the local community and surrounds.

August 20: Doors Open!

On August 4th Northside Physio officially opened its doors! It was an exciting day for founder Connie to finally see her vision come alive. With nearly 15 months in the process and countless delays it was a happy day.

Like any dream – it wouldn’t have come together without a team behind it. Many thanks to those who contributed to making Northside Physio come alive – family, partner, friends, graphic designers, signage wizards, IT experts, accountants, lawyers, fit out crew, neighbours and suppliers.

Northside Physio wanted to create a space with natural lighting and sunshine, but also respecting the patients privacy. The clinic has 3 treatment rooms and Pilates / rehabilitation area. Immediately when you walk in you feel the openness of the clinic as well as the north east facing windows with natural light.

With Stage 4 looming for the next 6 weeks, celebrations unfortunately were toned down. Northside Physio will continue to operate according to the Victorian DHHS recommendations. We look forward to helping the local community through their health journey.

June 20 – Work From Home

As restrictions continue to be in place during the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us are working from home. Clients presenting to Northside Physio have a variety of injuries from this new change to the workplace. The top 3 of these are:

  1. Neck pain
  2. Lower limb (knees, ankles, hips)
  3. Lower back pain

If you are one of these people from 1 or 3, it’s not surprising. Adapting from having an office space, with regular movement to a squished house, tiny monitor and track suit pants. Most complaints by clients are stiffness and localised pain due to lack of mobility during the day. Instead of going for a lunchtime walk to get food or coffee, it’s a short walk to the fridge in your slippers and then back to the dining room table for the next round of Zoom calls.

On the other end of the spectrum you have the go getters who have now acquired an extra 2 hours in their day as they don’t have to commute any more. The extra time allows them to do exercise and increase frequency. But with fitness centres shut, the options for exercise become quite small. The uptake in running, online home apps and live video streaming has seen clients sustain lower limb injuries (and others) from either incorrect technique, too much load or poor choice of exercise.

The advice from Physiotherapists:

  • If it hurts, don’t do it.
  • If your niggle doesn’t go away, get advice.
  • Look at your desk setup and consult your physio if you don’t think it’s right, a little modification can go a long way.
  • Remember how much your body did pre-covid and plan for a slow increase to exercise, don’t go gangbusters!
  • Movement is medicine – short breaks and mobility during the day are key!
  • If you aren’t sure what exercise is right for you, physios are here to help.

May 20 – Podcast

Sarah & Connie all smiles post recording

In May Northside Physiotherapist Connie had the pleasure of being a guest on a podcast. This podcast “ Mind Gold” is hosted by Sarah – olympic weightlifter, personal trainer, and all around good human.

Sarah aims to empower both physical and mental states, have open and frank discussions and create a positive attitude to every situation. Her open communication and pure honesty in her conversations are eye opening, fresh and provocative.

Discussed on the podcast is the importance of the Physiotherapy role in health care and the benefits for strong relationships between personal trainers and allied health. Discussed is the limitations, areas for growth as well as scope of works for both parties. Both Sarah and Connie agreed that there needs to be a strong relationship so both professions can maximise their clients progression in health.

They also discussed the health industry as a whole – from cults, medication, fad diets, booty workouts and the acceptance that you don’t always have to be perfect.
